MySims New Info revealed

Monday, February 26th, 2007

Micah Seff of IGN reported:
February 26, 2007 - Despite sparse details, we knew that EA would be bringing MySims, the first game in the popular series designed specifically for the Wii and Nintendo DS, at some point this year. Today, EA opted to finally reveal some more substantial details regarding the upcoming title. MySims is an entirely new experience which transforms the traditional Sims gameplay to take advantage of the capabilities of the Wii and DS while still delivering the creativity, customization, and open-endedness that has been the main draw of the series. Players can customize their own Sim to reflect their personal style and attitudes. The game contains a wide collection of unlockable clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.

Gameplay takes place in a disorganized town that can be reshaped according to the will of the player. Using a palette of building blocks, patterns, and creation tools, players can design furniture, appliances, and even homes and businesses. Players will have to interact with a large cast of secondary characters as they reshape the world to their liking. Every completed task, no matter how miniscule, will help the town expand. As it grows to incorporate new areas, players will receive special design elements to help customize the digital urban jungle.

Wing Commander Arena on Live Arcade This Summer

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

EA has recently announced that they’ll be bringing their space fighter franchise into Xbox Live Arcade this summer, allowing up to 16 players to play free-for-all or team-based combat.

“Wing Commander Arena is a fast-paced space combat game where players can team up to attack other teams of ships. The game introduces the classic franchise to an arcade-style experience that allows up to 16 players online in battle at once. Players can propel their customized ship through space, fire torpedoes and unleash deadly gravity bombs as they try to climb the leader board. Online players will compete for Frag count, high score and dueling stats.”

Despite how unimpressive “firing torpedoes” and “unleashing deadly gravity bombs” sounds (pretty much any other arcadey space shooter, right?), the game still sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Fire Emblem Goes Classic on Wii

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

The upcoming Wii title Fire Emblem: Akatsuki no Megami (translated in the US as Goddess of the Dawn) is set for release in Japan in about a week and Nintendo has finally started to pull back the curtain on the game. The turn-based strategy title seems to run on the same engine that powered Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on GameCube, but features a new storyline complete with more gorgeous pre-rendered cinematics.

Gamers looking for Wii remote-enhanced controls, however, are likely in for a disappointment. New video of Goddess of the Dawn showcases players using the classic controller to plan their attacks. In addition, the Wii remote can be turned on its side and played classic style, from what we can tell. However, there does not appear to be any motion-based gesturing or pointer-precise manipulation.

Wii Number #1 In January Sales

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Wii has kept on going strong in January with a 2 to 1 lead on the Playstation 3, and all also coming out ahead of the 360 by more than 100k consoles! Check out the bloomberg report below.

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) — Nintendo Co.’s Wii outsold Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 during January as consumers bought 436,000 of the video-game consoles.

Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 was the second-most purchased machine with sales of 294,000, followed by PlayStation 3 with 244,000, Credit Suisse analyst Heath Terry said today in a report, citing NPD Group Inc. data. (more…)

Virtual Console Mondays

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Nintendo has released the latest Virtual Console games for the United States for 2/20, and they are:

Donkey Kong Country (800 Points; SNES)

The Legend of Kage (500 Points; NES)

New Adventure Island (600 Points; TurboGrafx-16)

Streets of Rage (800 Points; Sega Genesis)

I’d like to get Donkey Kong Country, but at the same time I feel like I should hold off for the sequel. The second one was the best hands down.

Xbox Live Down for Maintenance Tomorrow

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Major Nelson has reported that Xbox Live is going to be down tomorrow, Febuary 20th, for maintenance.  While he lists that the time period will be between 2a.m.-5a.m. Pacific (or that’s my assumption since neither a.m. or p.m. are listed and it’s displayed in hundreds of hours).  You can check here for other time zones.

New Lost Planet Maps Coming

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Capcom announced yesterday (I know, we’re slow here, but give a bunch of College students a break) that they’ll be releasing new multiplayer maps for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition.

The first pack is planned to be released via Xbox Live® Marketplace on or about March 9 and contains two new multiplayer levels: “Radar Field,” a close quarters facility which is under construction and has a giant radar that provides a peak vantage point, and “Island 902,” a sprawling Pacific-themed battlefield with several islands connected by bridges as well as vast underwater areas. Additionally, “Battleground,” a multiplayer map originally offered exclusively to those who purchased the Collector’s Edition of the game, will be made available for free to all Lost Planet players. The next two packs, as well as the free Battleground map will be made available in the coming months.

The first Map Pack is going to cost you 400 MS Points. While there’s some content I don’t mind paying for, extra maps always seemed like something that should be free.

Massive Halo 3 Details Update

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Ok people, Bungie.net did something amazing this Weekly Update: they actually had information worth leaking for a change. I almost missed some of it, too, as I’m used to worthless updates on matchmaking and “there’s something cool we’re doing but I’m not telling! Neener neener neener!” The first of which, as can be seen in the image, is that the release has been noted as Fall 2007, a slight more accurate date than simply “2007″. My predictions are on November.

The second bit of information is this delicious quote:

In that same location, there was a Covenant grav-sniper platform, which I instinctively chucked all my grenades at to clear it of Jackal snipers (it was below my clifftop perch at the time) – so imagine my surprise when it exploded, and broke into sparking debris, which rained down on the ground below at speeds dictated by the still functioning grav lift beneath it.

That’s right, folks, destructible environments. Now not only do your vehicles explode, but your cover positions will as well. While destructible environments are nothing new, Bungie tends to have a style to features that just make them different. For example, dual-wielding.

Speaking of dual-wielding, they’ve given some updates on the controls.
