Sega Master System Coming to the Virtual Console

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

 mastersystem.JPG

So far, the Master System is only available in Japan. Sega, does have plans to bring it the Europe and America, however. This is excellent news for all of the Sega fans out there. Technically, this was one of the first consoles I had ever owned, so it will be sort of a blast from the past. What do you all think? More information below.

“ A new platform has entered the family of classic consoles that makes up Nintendo’s Virtual Console download service. Sega announced today that it will begin shortly distribution of Master System titles on the service.

Sega currently distributes via the Virtual Console a large library of classics for its once successful 16-bit Mega Drive (aka Genesis in America). Master System is the 8-bit predecessor to the Mega Drive which was released opposite the NES and, while popular in Europe, failed to take the spotlight from the Nintendo console elsewhere.

In addition to games that were originally released for the Master System platform, Sega’s Virtual Console Master System distribution will also include titles for the Sega Mark III and Game Gear platforms. Mark III was a Japanese predecessor of sorts for the Master System. Game Gear was, of course, Sega’s answer to the Game Boy.

Master System titles will begin appearing on the Japanese Virtual Console some time in February with Fist of the North Star (600 Wii points) and Fantasy Zone (500 Wii points).

Sega also plans on distributing Master System titles on the European and North American VC services. We’ll have details as soon as they’re available.

Rockstar announced today that their long awaited Grand Theft Auto IV will be hitting shelves for both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 on April 29th, 2008.

Quoted from the press release:

“We are so excited to be releasing Grand Theft Auto IV,” said Sam Houser, Founder and Executive Producer of Rockstar Games. “We’ve pushed ourselves very hard to make something incredible and hope the game sets a new benchmark for interactive entertainment.”

I’ve never been much a fan of the GTA games, but the fourth one actually looks intriguing.  What do you guys in the community think?  I just hope the engine works a lot better than the previous iteration.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty Demo Invades Xbox Live

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

feed_preview432lrg.jpg

I need to just play through my growing back catalog of demos, because this is one I do NOT want to miss.  Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, the WWII shooter that looks to turn the genre on its head, has landed on Xbox Live in all regions for download.  If you’re not familiar with the premise, the idea is that America never gets involved in WWII, and as a result Germany invades America and begins a take over.  You play as a New York construction worker that gets caught up in the mess and joins a resistance to knock the Nazi’s out of the White House.

The demo sizes up at 1.24gigs for the download.

The demo for The Club previously released in Europe, New Zealand and Australia is now available in North America for the downloading.  Now if only Turok would be downloadable.  I don’t feel like paying $5 for a demo and then claiming my reservation back from GameStop.

Your answers to those questions should help you decide which popular game to choose this week.Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

On their return from the Haunted Castle, the Great Devil kidnaps Lala and challenges Lolo to rescue her again. Now he must take on the challenge of the Great Devil’s Tower and Castle mazes. Fortunately, Lala was able to analyze each of the mazes as she was taken to the tower and left clues in the Jewel Boxes in each room. Each Jewel that Lolo collects contains information that will help him in the next room. In order to succeed, he’ll also have to push tiles, pick up Heart Framers, temporarily turn enemies into Eggs with his Magic Shots and ward off enemy attacks by moving Emerald Framers. With your help, Lolo and Lala will work together to escape the Great Devil’s clutches and defeat him.

SUPER STREET FIGHTER II: THE NEW CHALLENGERS (Super NES, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen - Violence, 800 Wii Points): When SUPER STREET FIGHTER II: THE NEW CHALLENGERS debuted, the fighting-game genre was forever changed.
