Friday, June 13th, 2008

coldplay-small.JPG

Activition is releasing a new Guitar Hero 3 Track Pack for download next Thursday featuring the band Coldplay. The pack will include the band’s first big hit “Yellow” from their 2000 album Parachutes, along with “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face” from the multi-platinum 2002 A Rush of Blood to the Head, and rounding it out with their new single “Violet Hill” from the upcoming album Viva la Vida. No word yet on the cost, but we expect the same 500 MS points price point as previous track packs.

While Coldplay are not known for being a guitar heavy band, the pack includes some great songs from across the band’s catalogue. If you’re in the mood for something a little more toned down and relaxed to play with a friend, and you like Coldplay, check out the pack and let us know what you think here.

EA Gets Sued Over Exclusive Deal With The NFL

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

ealogo_small.JPG

Electronic Arts has been hit with a lawsuit due to their exclusive deal with the NFL, AFL, and NCAA Football leagues. As readers may know, EA secured the exclusive deal back in December of 2004. Prior to the signing, competition with Take-Two Interactive had led EA to bring their MSRP on the Madden games down to $29.95. Once the deal was signed, Madden 2006 hit the shelves at a $49.95 price point; a jump of nearly %70.

“The plaintiffs have requested a class action and want restitution and damages for buyers of EA football game since August of 2005.” says the San Jose Business Journal.

Weather this suit will bear any real fruit for the plaintiffs, is up for speculation. We would love to hear your thoughts on the news in our forums section.

Frogger 2 and Commado 3 Released Today!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

frog2.jpg

To me, Frogger has always been sort of a fun family game. It’s one I cared enough to purchase on the Arcade when it released originally. However, Frogger 2 wasn’t quite the gem in the series, and I’d rather stick to the original, and maybe it’s poor 3D adaption. Commando 3 also looks to be a rather original game hitting the marketplace. Judging by the screens, it seems fairly reminiscent to the Assault Heroes series that we are all familiar with. Good, bad, or ugly, these games are out today, each of them retailing at 800 Microsoft Points.

No Blu-ray for the Xbox 360…Seriously

Monday, June 9th, 2008

noblu-ray.jpg

Rumors have begun circulating yet again that Microsoft will soon be adding Blu-ray to the Xbox 360. Several sites recently have claimed insider knowledge and several of the home theater forums across the web are hosting hot debate between fanboys on both sides. As to the validity of these claims, Robbie Bach with Microsoft has squashed these rumors in an interview featured in Sunday’s edition of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Our plan continues to focus on high-definition experiences. Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver those through the Xbox Live (online download) service. It’s a great way to get the high-definition concept because it’s right there. There’s no additional media. There is nothing you need to purchase.

If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven’t seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It’s not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD DVD format. You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player. The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, “I am not going to pay extra for that.”

So there it is. As many Wii60 readers have said in a handful of threads over the last six months, Microsoft will focus on their IP Distributed media via Xbox Live.

The interview has much more to say about Microsoft’s plans for the future, which you can read here: Source

The Bourne Conspiracy demo out on Live today

Monday, May 5th, 2008

bourne.jpg

A demo for The Bourne Conspiracy is now up on XboX Live. For those of you interested in the game, you’ll need to make sure you have at least 1.24GB of space on your hard drive for the download. The demo is available in Australia, New Zealand, India, and North America. Sorry Europe :(

As a big fan of the Bourne films, I feel obligated to check out this game, but I’m really not sure what to expect. As noted recently by A Reaver (in the OT forum), Damon does not offer any voice acting for the game. Speculation has been that the violence in the game put him in somewhat of a moral quandary, but I’ve not yet seen any official response from the Damon camp on that. In any case, the game at least caught my interest in a week where all I can see is GTA4 propaganda everywhere I look.

High Moon Studios’ previous project Darkwatch, received some good reviews, so maybe there is hope for a decent Bourne game. If you’ve got the hard drive space and some time to kill, please check out the demo and share your thoughts in our forums.

If you’ve already shredded your way through all the in game content, or are just looking for something new, check out the Marketplace Thursday May 8th. No word in Activision’s offical press release on a price, but we’re expecting it will carry the same old 500 MS Points price tag as previous releases.

Monday VC Update: Powerball and King’s Knight Out Now

Monday, March 24th, 2008

kingsknight.PNG

Fresh week, fresh games. 2 in fact. I really can’t say anything about either of them because I have never played them. However, let me thank Nintendo again for keeping their service updated frequently. Oh, and if you go to check these games out, pick up the new update, if you haven’t already.

“It’s a mad season for basketball lovers, but even the most hardcore hoops fan needs a break from the action this time of year. While they’re a far cry from basketball, the latest additions to the Wii Shop Channel offer plenty of fast-moving fun and high-scoring thrills of their own. Check them out and get a fresh taste of gaming excitement that can last well into April and beyond.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:

KING’S KNIGHT (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): In the kingdom of Izander, the fair Princess Claire has been kidnapped by a foul and insidious dragon, and it is the mission of four brave fighters to save her. Through five thrilling, fast-action stages, our gallant heroes-a knight, a wizard, a monster and a thief-will take on an army of incredible enemies. You must help them reach their goal, as you are now part of the team that will fight to free the princess from her imprisonment. Keep your wits about you, plan your strategy and set off on an exciting adventure.

POWERBALL (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Eight different teams representing various nations are vying to become the POWERBALL champions, and you control one of the eight in your quest for the championship. A hybrid of games like rugby and football, POWERBALL is played on a 100-yard field. Try to score by either carrying the ball into your opponent’s end zone or kicking it into your opponent’s net for points. This one- or two-player game offers both exhibition and league play. Jump into a game of POWERBALL and try a brand new sport.
